2006 St. Louis Cardinals, World Series Champions I loved that the Cardinals and Tigers were facing off in the World Series.
Thoughts of 1968, when I clearly remember (as an 8-year old) Jim Northrup hitting that triple that won the game and the Series. Amazing. One of my first baseball memories.
I've never rooted for the Cardinals, but after the Dodgers went down, for some reason, I found myself rooting for them, starting with the Mets series. I've never been a La Russa fan, or a Pujols, Rolen or Edmonds follower, but with only 83 regular season wins and all the baseball pundits leaving them for dead, they became 'my' team during these playoffs. Honestly, if they had faced the Dodgers in the first round, they may have lost!
But, they got all the big hits -- tell me Scott Spezio isn't the Jim Leyritz of his day -- and pitched well. Now they have their 10th championship --second most in baseball history, just behind the N.Y. Yankees with 26!
The ghosts of Dizzy Dean, Joe Medwick and the rest of the Gashouse Gang world champion Cardinals of 1934 are definitely popping the champagne up there somewhere. Congratulations Cardinals!
