Bucky
Buries Boston
On October 2nd, 1978, the Yankees played the Red
Sox in a one game playoff to determine the Eastern
Division winner. The game was an epic battle filled
with players named "Reggie", "Yaz",
"Pudge", "Goose" and "Thurman".
But the man of the day was named "Bucky",
as in light-hitting shortstop Bucky Dent, whose
seventh inning home run catapulted the comeback
Yankees ahead of the Red Sox, 3-2. It was as stunning
a shot as any in the annals of the game. I put
this ball together to commemorate the 20th anniversary
of this great game.

This panel has Carl Yastrzemski
and Goose Gossage on it. They squared off in the
dramatic final at-bat of the game."Yaz"
signed his name on the ball. Goose wrote: "78
W.S. Champs. It had another foot on it!". This
refers to the pitch he threw to Yaz that Yaz couldn't
get around on, thus popping up to Nettles to end
the game.
