| Casey Stengel is IN This
green and white laminated fiberboard sign hung
on the office door of Casey Stengel during his
tenure as the manager of the New York Yankees
(1949-1960). During Casey's reign, the Yankees
won 10 American League pennants and 7 World Series
Championships. Can you imagine the sets of eyes
that looked at this plaque before they set foot
into Casey's office after he called them in? Probably
a rookie named Mickey Mantle, in 1951, when Casey
had to tell his prized pupil that he was being
sent down to the minors after a poor start to
his career. During the 1950s, when Yankee domination
was the rule, how poetic is the open-ended, right
side of this plaque? The Yankees, with Mickey
and Yogi, Whitey and Casey, never thought the
winning would end.
