| The Infamous
Bagwell Trade
This New Britain Red Sox jersey was worn by the
eventual Astros great Jeff Bagwell during his
1990 season with the Boston Red Sox's Class AA
affiliate. Dealt for pitcher Larry Anderson on
August 31, 1990, a distraught Bagwell (a Boston
native and life-long BoSox fan) was an ideal fit
in Houston. The Eastern League's leading hitter
at the time of the shocking deal, Bagwell proved
a worthy replacement indeed for first baseman
Glenn Davis.
ESPN’s Page 2 ranked this trade
as the second worst in baseball history. Anderson
went on to pitch 22 innings for the Red Sox while
Bagwell, approaching his 16th season with the
Astros, has hit a total of 449 home runs in his
career, was the 1994 National League MVP and is
surely headed to the Hall of Fame.
