Bob Nieman’s name will
forever have a place in the record books as the first
and, until 2000, only player in the history of baseball
to hit a homer in his first two professional at-bats.
He accomplished that astonishing feat while at Fenway
over fifty-five years ago. This is the actual second home
run ball that he hit. It was off of Mickey McDermott.
Once part of his personal collection, this Official American
League baseball was inscribed by Bob in black ballpoint,
“Record Setting Ball-Home Runs First Two At Bats-This
Is The Second”, on one panel, while the opposite
side of the ball reads, “2nd HR-1st Game-September
14, 1951-Off Mickey McDermott.”
